Spring Stove Maintenance: Getting Your Stove Ready for the Off-Season

As the weather warms up across Staffordshire and Cheshire, it’s tempting to shut the stove door and forget about it until autumn. But spring is actually the best time to give your stove some attention, while it’s not in daily use and any issues can be fixed well before you need it again.

Start with a thorough clean of the firebox and glass. Remove any leftover ash and soot, and use a proper stove glass cleaner rather than household products, which can scratch or discolour the glass over time. Give the exterior a wipe down too, checking for any surface rust that may have appeared over winter.

Next, inspect the door seals and rope gaskets. These compress with heat over a season of use and can wear thin, leading to poor air control and reduced efficiency by the time you light up again in the colder months. If the rope looks flattened or the door doesn’t shut with a firm resistance, it’s worth having it replaced before storage.

Spring is also the ideal time to book a chimney sweep. Sweeping after the heating season removes the creosote and soot that built up over winter, reducing the risk of chimney fires and nesting birds finding their way in during the warmer months. Most sweeps recommend at least one clean per year, and doing it now means your flue is ready to go from the very first cold evening in autumn.

Finally, if you’ve been thinking about upgrading, spring and summer are a great time to buy. Not only do you avoid the autumn rush on installations, but our team has more availability to fit your new stove at a time that suits you, well ahead of winter demand.
